From our perspective, sustainable development is about more than selecting a few trendy imported finishes or trinkets. With Kirby Cottages, we set out to fundamentally change the way we approach the building process.
We began by selecting an underutilized site within an established community, close to schools, work, recreational and community activities, so its residents would be connected. We surveyed every tree on the site and worked hard to integrate them into the design, minimizing manipulation of the landscape. By consolidating cars in an auto court and working with fire personnel on alternative protection methods, we were able to significantly reduce pavement and other impervious ground surfaces that would have accompanied a traditional auto-centric development.
